So the funny thing about sewing strike-offs is you receive the fabric usually a season ahead of time for special occasion fabrics. Strike-offs are then sewn to give customers an idea of how they look sewn up, fabric is preordered and it generally arrives 2-3 months later. And that’s how I came to be sewing Halloween fabric in July!

This week I received this awesome package of Halloween fabric strike offs from Snowy Owl Custom Fabrics.

They told me they hoped I was ready for a challenge! I received the CUTEST little mummy dinosaur panel (y’all know how I love dinos for little ones!) and EIGHT additional Halloween pieces of of Cotton Lycra!

I knew immediately I wanted to make Kai some winter rompers from these awesome Gems and spider webs! I used my favorite Harem Coverall from Brindille & Twig, but I sewed a size 12-18 months so he would have growing room between now and Halloween! Hopefully they are not gigantic on him, but the 9-12 month size is fitting pretty well now so I think we will be good!

For the Frankenstein romper, I slightly modified the front by cutting the pattern piece straight across and adding a seam allowance on each side so the “hair” could be a different color from the “face”. I also appliqued a piece of black to the top of the green piece of the front so I could have a zigzag hairline.  The facial features are also just appliqued on from cotton lycra scraps using Heat n’ Bond Lite.  You can find general tips on regular sewing machine applique here.  I used the Beryl Green Gem cotton lycra for this one.

The Jack O’ Lanter romper was appliqued just like Frankenstein, but no color blocking was needed. I used the Pumpkin Gem cotton lycra, of course!

SpiderRomper

The spider romper was sewn from this great Purple Webs cotton lycra with matching Amethyst Gem cotton lycra. I actually used the spider from my Spider Garden Flag set on this romper. It’s not technically an applique embroidery machine design, but since the knit applique will not fray it doesn’t actually need a traditional zigzag stitch and it worked out great.  I used a long piece of purple rick rack for his “web”.
