It’s a Monster Tour!  Be sure to check out all of the links at the end of this post for additional costumes and Halloween fun!

Over the years I sewed many Halloween costumes for my three kiddos. So it was a lot of fun to sew Kai’s first costume for his very first Halloween!  His mom wanted him to dress as Toothless from “How To Train Your Dragon” and luckily I received the PERFECT fabric in the mail last week from Shear Madness Fabrics‘ current preorder – BLACK DRAGON SCALES!

This costume was such an easy sew. The hardest part was figuring out the additions to the hat but I just freehand drew them on paper. I used the Teenie Beanie free hat pattern by Patterns For Pirates. I made it from black fleece as we can have some cold Halloweens and also so it would hold up structurally to the horn additions.  I sized up on the band slightly since the fleece has much less stretch than knit. I used green and black mirror glitter canvas from Mikri World LLC for the eyes and nostrils and simply stitched them on.

For the little dragon shoes I used the PetitBoo baby shoe pattern. I made them from vinyl and lined them with the same black dragon scale knit as the top/pants.  I also added three dragon “toenails” to each bootie. The dragon toenails were made from black mirror glitter canvas from Mikri World LLC.

For the pants, I used the Max Joggers pattern by Max & Meena to make some joggers from the dragon scales print.

I also made a matching raglan from the same dragon scales print. Max & Meena’s Mega Max Raglan pattern is one of my favorites!

For the wings and the tail, I used the free Dragon Add On by Twig & Tale.  I modified the tale just slightly to make it narrower and added the tiny fins at the bottom.  Son of the Maker added the vinyl onto the red fin using adhesive vinyl.  Both are made using the black mirror glitter canvas from Mikri World LLC.  I also used red marine vinyl from Mikri for the red fin.  Both the tail and the wings have kam snaps so they can be removed when in a car seat.  The tail snaps to the waistband of the pants and the wings snap to the back of the raglan.

And that is how you sew a dragon!
