There is a new Custom Knit fabric company on the block and I was lucky enough to receive two pieces of fabric from their current preorder to sew up! Happy Cactus Fabric has just opened their first round – Fellow Travelers! Happy Cactus is offering a wide variety of fabric bases including cotton lycra, bamboo lycra, cotton woven, and bamboo muslin. And you can even preorder fat halves – always a win in my book!
I was sent a panel and matching coordinate to make Kai’s cute little romper, both in cotton/lycra, which I wrote about here. Happy Cactus is going to make the Out of the World graphic a little bit smaller on the final panels so they will work with a greater variety of sizes
I also was sent a yard of the Galactic Paint Bamboo Muslin. This is an incredibly soft woven, sort of gauzy feel fabric! It does not have stretch like cotton/lycra or bamboo/lycra as it is a woven fabric. I had never worked with it before, but I knew I wanted to make Kai a Pillow mat.
A pillow mat is like a giant pillow case, only instead of having room for one pillow, it has inserts for 3 or more! I made my pillow case with three openings for three pillows since Kai is still a little guy. (Note: We would never leave a baby unattended on a mat of any kind like this for even a minute. They are ideally for older kids.)
Pillow mats not only make a nice nap mat for older kids, but they are great for lounging, also! They can be folded to create a nice leaning “chair” (propped against a wall or piece of furniture) and are great for travel or Nana’s house.
I LOVED the bamboo muslin for the pillow mat! It is incredibly soft and nice and cool to the touch. I think it’s the perfect fabric for these. I was able to make a 3-pillow mat from one yard of fabric by using it width wise. This would not work for a one way print unless you were okay with the print running the length of the mat instead of side to side. For side to side for one way prints, you would need more fabric.
I’m now brainstorming all the ways I might use bamboo muslin in the future after sewing this piece up!
Happy Cactus Fabrics’ cotton lycra is an awesome weight and so soft! Be sure to check out all the other great prints in the Happy Travelers round! Preorder closes 8/6!
